The WordSmith’s Workshop
For authors
I like to think of children’s books as the window through which they learn to see the world, and as an editor I help you polish the glass so they can see clearly.
I offer line editing, copy editing, and proofreading for children’s books in the 9-12 age range. If you’re not sure what you need, I offer a free consultation to let you know which service would be best for you.
When I think of the books I loved growing up, I can see as an adult how they shaped who I am, and how I think.
From Pam Muñoz Ryan’s Esperanza Rising, I learned never to be afraid to start over — advice Esperanza’s treasured grandmother gives her time and again — and I learned how difficult starting over can be, without ever having to start over myself. Frances Hodgson Burnett’s timeless The Secret Garden taught me something similar, as well as the importance of learning from people different to yourself, and finding peace in hardship. From Georgia Byng’s Molly Moon series (which my Dad bought me because the author’s name was Georgia), I learned about the importance of daring to escape unhappy situations, and of believing in who you are and what you can do, but not at the expense of your friendships. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster taught me, but I can tell you I think of it at least once a week with a smile. Perhaps the value of finding adventure in life, which is exactly what the booth wants to teach Milo.
But, perhaps with the exception of The Phantom Tollbooth in which Milo is quite definitively informed that he needs to change his perspective, none of these books want you to pick them up because they’re trying to teach you anything. They want you to pick them up because they are wonderful stories, with characters that feel like they’re breathing next to you, and writing that is still with you decades later.
Most of that magic is conjured by the writer. But those kind of lasting impressions are the kind of spell that can only be cast by working with an editor who cares that every sentence adds to your book, and who can’t wait to help it on its journey to becoming a tattered fixture on a child’s shelf.

This includes manuscripts where:
Any of the writing itself is AI generated
The plot or plot outline was AI generated
The premise, key ideas and themes, or other creative elements were AI generated.
This excludes specific cases where AI generated passages are necessary. An example might be if a peculiar AI generated letter were a plot point in a mystery.
It’s important to clarify that I’m not talking about generative AI being used for research. If you could have used Google, but it just would have been slower, it’s fine!

Proofreading is the very last layer of editing your manuscript; at the proofreading stage you should be confident and happy with every sentence, metaphor and simile. At the proofreading level, I will go through your manuscript and catch spelling/grammatical errors, typos, and any other surface level mistakes.
Price: £0.015 per word

Copyediting is going through your manuscript to catch problems such as repetitive phrases, tense inconsistency, or ambiguity, and includes light rephrasing where necessary as well as correcting spelling/grammatical mistakes. Each change or suggestion will be fully explained with a constructive inline comment.
Price: £0.02 per word

A step up from copy editing, a line edit means going through your manuscript thoroughly line by line, doing everything a copy edit does but also polishing imagery, perfecting sentence and even paragraph structure. A line edit ensures flow, consistent style, and readability. Each change or suggestion will be fully explained with a constructive inline comment.
Price: £0.025 per word
